Strategies to Promote Inland Navigation

The SPIN-TN network will develop a European strategy to promote inland navigation and encourage its exploitation. Inland Navigation carries 33% of the EC intra-community freight, although it has not increased proportionally with the high growth in road transport. Further action from policy makers is needed to obtain a more environmentally sustainable transport system. The need for the environmentally friendly Inland Navigation will grow with the enlargement of the EC.

The consortium of via donau (AT), Promotie Binnenvaart Vlaanderen (BE), Europäisches Entwicklungszentrum für Binnen- und Küstenschiffahrt (DE), Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat (NL) and France Développment Conseil (FR) will cooperate with the European Federation for Inland Navigation to ensure the future continuation of the SPIN Thematic Network activities. A high-level advisory committee will guide the strategy and enable its acceptance and exploitation. The network’s members include representatives from all inland navigation stakeholders and comprise actors from industry, transport and aministration.
