WG3 Innovative Transport Vehicles Rhine (Müller)

File: WG3 Innovative Transport Vehicles Rhine (Müller).pdf (Size: 1.68 mb)

The paper addresses the specific innovations in vessel technologies on the river Rhine. Barriers for further innovations are discussed and recommendations to overcome these are given. The paper provides a technical specification of vessels currently operating on the river Rhine, starting with conventional motor ships and formations of barges up to river-sea-ships. The report also considers unconventional vehicles by explaining the basic physical conditions for the increase of the required engine power in dependency of speed and water depth.
The paper makes recommendations associated with the harmonization of competitive conditions between different transport modes, spatial planning of distribution centres nearby inland waterways, use of small feeder ships. They also address harmonisation of financial subsidies for new shipbuildings between the EU Member States, changes to manning scales, scrapping schemes, and support for refit concepts.
