This Working Paper provides a review of conventional and new technologies in inland navigation with regard to logistic solutions, operational procedures and technical devices. It identifies and explains what kind of impacts these applications might have on the crew. It provides recommendations to improve these impacts, by improving fiscal and administrative framework conditions (e.g. social security contributions, bureaucratic requirements, admission of foreign workers), by harmonised education and training standards taking account of linguistic and business management skills (e.g. commercial law, personnel law, fiscal law, cost accounting).
